GREEN
BAY -- Afterward, Jane Albright was able to celebrate her 100th victory
as the Uni-Wisconsin 66UWGB 56 versity of Wisconsin's women's basketball
coach.
But a scrappy group of players from UW-Green Bay made certain that Albright and the No. 25 Badgers didn't enjoy themselves too soon. In fact, not until late in Wednesday night's non-conference game at the Brown County Arena was victory secure for Wisconsin. UW outscored the Phoenix by a 17-7 margin in the final 7 minutes, 25 seconds and pulled away for a 66-56 victory. The Badgers improved to 4-1 with the home opener against No. 3 Tennessee up Sunday at the Kohl Center. Green Bay fell to 1-4. Albright improved to 100-53 in her sixth season at UW. "Actually, that's the first time I've really thought about that," said Albright, 288-163 overall as a head coach. "It's fun. I'm glad I'm there. I hope I get 100 more and they let me stay awhile." LaTonya Sims led the Badgers with 17 points, including a 3-point shot that gave UW the lead for good at 52-49 with 5:42 remaining to play. "Coming into the game, we knew it would be a dogfight -- (playing) state rivals," Sims said. "Since we have Tennessee coming up, Jane and everybody else did a good job telling us to stay focused on Green Bay because we knew it would be a good game. They are a good team and I give them a lot of credit." The Badgers were able to pound the ball inside to Nina Smith for two baskets and Jessie Stomski for another as they built a 62-54 edge. UW's size advantage proved too much, as the Badgers outrebounded the Phoenix, 53-29. The 6-foot-3 Stomski had 14 points and 10 rebounds for UW, which shot 57 percent in the second half after shooting 36 percent in the first 20 minutes. Guard Tamara Moore contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds. Smith, a 6-4 freshman center, had a career-high 15 points for UW. "I don't think any of us are happy with the results of that game," UW-Green Bay coach Kevin Borseth said. "But we had fight in us. You were a very good witness to a terrific basketball team -- Wisconsin. Down the stretch, they just took the ball and rammed it right down our throat." Borseth said he believed the Badgers didn't look inside as much as they could have. "You would think that would be our game plan in a game like this because of our size, but we really want our guards to work on their perimeter shooting," Albright said. "We don't want to be a team that is an all-post team. ... I think that to be a complete team, we need that guard development." Melanie Tilque and Trisha Ebel led UW-Green Bay with 15 points apiece. |
