The University of Wisconsin women's 68-55 victory over Indiana- Purdue-Indianapolis

Sunday at the Kohl Center was its last game for 2 1/2 weeks.

The Badgers don't play again until Dec. 30 when defending NCAA champion

Purdue comes to town to open the Big Ten Conference season. Despite the

long layoff, coach Jane Albright doesn't feel her team will accumulate

much rust after playing a grueling early-season schedule that saw the Badgers

go 1-2 vs. three ranked teams.

"I think certainly we played a really tough schedule and it's time to give

them some time for exams and time away from basketball," she said. "We're

gonna let them go home and let their parents get them in the gym. I'm gonna

go to North Carolina and let my mother feed me."

UW will return to practice Dec. 27 and have a few days to prepare for the

Boilermakers.

Tall timber

Possibly the most telling statistic to come from the victory was that the

Badgers hauled in twice as many rebounds as the Jaguars. UW had a season-best

56 rebounds Sunday to top the previous high of 53 set in a 66-56 victory

over UW-Green Bay Dec. 1.

The Badgers were especially aggressive on the offensive glass, grabbing

25 rebounds. The Jaguars as a team finished with 28 total rebounds. Jessie

Stomski, at 6-foot-3, led UW with 11. Nina Smith (6- 4) followed with 10

and LaTonya Sims (6-3) added eight.

While it was no surprise the Badgers dominated - IUPUI didn't start a player

taller than 5-11 - it was a good sign that they were able to take advantage

of the height differential, which opened up their inside game.

"(The guards) did an exceptional job of getting the ball inside. I think

our post made good decisions on when to kick it out and when to try to

score," Albright said. "Rebounding was a very dominating edge, and it should

have been. When your two post players have a double- double in 20-some

minutes of play, it's a real nice effort."

Back in Black

Contrary to her belief, sophomore guard Kyle Black doesn't have to average

a point a minute to garner quality playing time.

Black came into Sunday's game averaging 3.0 points per game and shooting

38.5 percent from the field. Against the Jaguars, she sank 2 of 4 shots,

including a 3-pointer that gave UW a 49-34 lead.

"I thought Kyle Black gave us a really big spark and that's something,

quite frankly, we've been missing," Albright said. "She certainly can come

in and give us rebounds and hustle and steals and that type of thing. And

then hit a couple of 3s."

Injury update

Kristi Seeger, a former Stoughton athlete, was held out of Sunday's game

after taking an elbow to the head in practice Thursday.

The freshman forward sustained a concussion and was in street clothes as

a precautionary measure. Seeger will be ready for the beginning of the

Big Ten season, Albright said.

"She actually also had a little (concussion) a week and a half ago, and

we wanted to make sure everything was all right with her," Albright said.
