The Badger booster club will sponser bus trips to UW-Green Bay, Marquette and Northwestern.  The cost is $25 for the Marquette and $35 for the other two.  Call Cindy at Burkhalter Tours, 833-1525 extension 260, for more information or to sign up.

Redmond Washington's Emily Ashbaugh has given a verbal commitment to play for the Badgers in 2000.  Emily is a 6'5 center who may also get minutes at small forward.  She does not have the powerfully built body of Jessie Stomski or Nina Smith.  Instead, she will give the Badgers the thinner, more mobile player that can cause Wisconsin match-up problems.

Candas Smith has been cleared to play.  She will wear a face mask for two weeks.  She has not decided whether to redshirt or not this year.

Candas Smith has undergone more facial surgery and will not be available until at least December.  She will have at least one more operation.  If she can not postpone it until after the season, she will have it in December and be lost for the season.

Wisconsin incoming freshman Candas Smith had one of those "this-could-have-been- so-terribly-much-worse" incidents Saturday night, Aug 29.

Candas was a front-seat passenger in a car that was involved in an accident.  I've heard conflicting reports of whether or not she was wearing a seat belt.  In any event, her face went through the windshield.  She did not lose consciousness or any feeling in her extremities, nor did she suffer a concussion.

She does have some significant cuts on her face, especially around her nose.  She's expected to be hospitalized for another ten days while she has plastic surgery, which will involve skin grafts.  If that goes well, she is not expected to miss any playing time.

Her other injuries were limited to bumps and bruises.

Candas is from Madison and will compete for minutes at point guard.  She's also one lucky young woman.

The Big Ten all-star team, led by Jane Albright, finished with a 3-1 record on a tour of Germany and Belgium.  LaTonya Sims and Missy Konieczny represented Wisconsin.

The University announced that, if the women earn the right to host a first round NCAA game, it will be played at the UW Fieldhouse and not the Kohl Center.  The boys' high school basketball tournament will play in the Kohl Center.  In 2001, the women will have priority at the Kohl Center and would play first round games there.

The coaches presented various awards to players at the annual banquet.  These were:
  MVP: LaTonya Sims
Captain's Cup: LaTonya  Sims, Kelley Paulus, Amy Wiersma
Rebounding Excellence: LaTonya  Sims, Jessie Stomski
  Academic Excellence: Amy  Wiersma
  Service Award: Amy  Wiersma
Academic all-Big 10: Amy Wiersma, Judy Ebeling
  Free Throw Excellence:  Tamara Moore
  Defense:  Tamara Moore

  Coaches Award:  Christine Cleary
  Sixth Player Award:  Kyle Black
Tam J Flarup Media Award:  Kelley Paulus
