6'5 center
It will be impossible to remember Amy without thinking of unmet expectations and unrealized potential. A fluid 6'5 athlete, Wiersma was blessed with the perfect basketball body--except for her hands. Despite her height and the fact that she rarely shot from more than 5 feet, she finished her career as a 37% field goal shooter. With each missed shot her head sunk lower, her frustrations mounted and her overall play deteriorated. She averaged a rebound every 3.5 minutes in her career, but she probably had one bounce off both hands for every one she caught. It's impossible to know what happened and unfair to guess. Anyone who watched her practice knows that her problems weren't caused by a lack of effort or by poor work habits. She missed much of her senior year with a finger injury, but she had already lost her starting job to freshman Jessie Stomski when she was hurt and her play when she returned was typical of her first three years. She was generally a solid defensive player, although she never got out of the habit of swatting at shots and was called for more fouls than necessary as a result.
