Recruiting is an interesting process. Highly paid professional adults beg, cajole and plead with 16 and 17 year old kids to allow the adult to provide the kid with an all-expense paid education. Kind of a different concept.
But if a coach wants to compete on the court, first she has to win the battle for the kids. In her five years at Wisconsin Jane Albright has established herself as a first rate recruiter.
Here are some rumors and some speculations about who might be signing with Jane next November. I say rumors, because, at this point in the process, I'm not sure anything is more than a rumor or a guess. The real recruiting process is just beginning and player's lists of schools will change--in the case of some players, they will change daily.
I'll update the info as I hear more. The rankings are from the All-Star Girls Report, which is put out by the Women's Basketball Journal and the Blue Star Index.. They're as good as anything--which means I'll use them if they make Wisconsin look good but I wouldn't bet much on them. Mainly I measure a high school player by the caliber of schools that are recruiting her.
Players listed in yellow have had changes made.
Emily Ashbaugh 6'5 center, Redmond Wash Ashbaugh is one of the top 10 post players in the country. She is down to Wisconsin, UCLA and Stanford. The Badgers will need a back-up post player, but it's hard to see a top player agreeing to come of the bench here. This may be the first player out of the midwest that has seriously considered Wisconsin. She did more than just consider Bucky. Ashbaugh announced that she will play for Jane and the Badgers for the next four years. Emily says she will play center or small forward, which conjures up an image of a front line consisting of 6'4 Nina Smith, 6'3 Jessie Stomski and 6'5 Ashbaugh.
Emily will be the only players Wisconsin signs in the fall. They may sign a point guard in the spring. There aren't many top players left, but the Badgers could use a back-up. The coaches are now working on the sophomores and juniors in high school. The junior class is reputed to be excellent.
This will change frequently. Check back.
