Wisconsin 68 IUPUI 55
All that was missing was that great American philosopher Casey Stengel. One could hear him asking “Can’t anyone here shoot the ball?”
On this Sunday, the answer was “not really.”
Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (which heretofore shall be referred to as the Jaguars) came to Madison to play a Wisconsin team that had had its collective feelings hurt twice in the past week.
The only bruising the Badgers’ suffered was to their shooting percentage.
The Jaguars started a miniature line with their tallest starter being 5’11. The Badgers started their usual super-sized lineup, with only one player below 5’11.
Not surprisingly, the big guys dominated.
The Jags spent most of the game looking at the basket from far away as Wisconsin’s post players dominated inside. A third of their shots came from beyond the three-point line, and a goodly number of the rest came from 15 plus feet.
Wisconsin again faced a zone defense. At times the Badgers moved the ball very well and got good shots. They frequently missed those shots, but they got them. If fact they missed shots from all over. They missed three point shots. They missed jump shots. And they missed lay-ups. Lots of lay-ups.
With ten minutes gone, the teams were tied at 13.
Guards Kelley Paulus, Kyle Black and Candas Smith entered the game. Freshman Smith is fast becoming the Badgers top point guard. The team simply plays better when she’s on the court. Paulus and Black provided offense off the bench.
Behind six points from Paulus and Black, the Badgers strolled to a 7 point lead and never looked back.
Wisconsin dominated the game, but couldn’t shoot well enough to make the score as one-sided as the game was.
Badger post players Jessie Stomski and Nina Smith essentially did what they wanted in the paint—except hit layups of course. Both players said that they shot the ball poorly. Each missed a number of shots they usually make, but they each also hit half of their shots. They led the Badgers dominance on the boards. Wisconsin doubled the Jaguars rebounds, 56-28. Stomski had 11 of those and N Smith had 10.
This wasn’t a smoothly played game. A lot of fouls, turnovers and missed shots. For the game the Jaguars shot 39% and the normally good shooting Badgers managed only 37%. At times, Wisconsin ran its offense the way it should be run. The Badgers played generally solid defense.
The Jaguars played hard, and probably as well as they could. There was simply no way they could overcome the Badgers size and talent advantage.
Nina Smith led Wisconsin with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Stomski had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kelley Paulus hit 12 off the bench and LaTonya Sims added 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Jennifer Stucker led the Jaguars with 16 points, while Kellie Byers added 10.
Wisconsin is off until they begin Big 10 play Dec 30 against Purdue.
Editors note. I wasn’t able to get write-ups of last weeks two losses posted. If anyone is interested in them, they are posted on my website. You can get to them from the schedule page:
