Parana 90 Wisconsin 70
A local reporter,
in a preview of Monday's game, said that the result would not answer questions
about the Badgers because foreign teams are not as physical as Big 10 teams.
Silly boy.
A very physical,
quick and extremely talented Parana Basquete Clube team gave the Wisconsin
Badgers a basketball lesson before 3,104 people Monday night.
As has been
stated before Parana could beat most, if not all, college teams. WNBA
star Vicki Bullet is certainly the best player the Badgers will play against.
Despite the 20
point difference, Wisconsin probably played about as well as Parana allowed.
Wisconsin shot 50% from the field and outrebounded the Brazilians.
Parana used their quickness and aggressiveness to take full advantage of the
Badgers propensity to throw soft passes as they swiped the ball 18 times and
converted many of them into easy layups.
Wisconsin is
going to depend on six players this year and those six were basically able to
stay with Parana. Wisconsin led for the first 10 minutes of the game and
played them even for about the first six minutes of the second half. As
the Badgers substituted and got tired, Parana pulled ahead and we spent the
second half determining the final gap.
It was a fun game
to watch, simply because it's fun to watch a team play as well as Parana did.
After the game, the Wisconsin players said that they had learned a lot.
There was a lot they could have learned, and if they did, it was well worth
the loss.
They run a motion
offense with some of the best passing I've seen. Their defense is
aggressive and makes teams pay for any mistakes. Wisconsin played the
Parana "A" team most of the night as four of their five starters
played 40 minutes. Although if you consider the amount of time several
of the players spent giving the officials replays, they really played for more
than 40 minutes.
Bullet led Parana
with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 blocks and 4 steals. Vedrana
Grgin had 25 points and 10 boards, while Helen Santos Luz added 23 points and
7 assists.
For Wisconsin,
Jessie Stomski spent most of the night going against Bullet. She
acquitted her self quite nicely with 21 points, on 9 of 13 from the floor, and
9 rebounds. Kelley Paulus had 13 points and LaTonya Sims added 11.
Nina Smith had 10 points and 6 rebounds, although she tired noticeably during
her 32 minutes.
The Badgers
played better in this game than in their first exhibition. The games
start counting on Friday when they play Southern Illinois in a tournament in
Lincoln Nebraska.
