Wisconsin 66 So Illinois 59

Coaches like to say that a basketball season is a marathon and not a sprint.   The Wisconsin women's team took those words to heart as they strolled away from the starting line that opens the 1999 season.

The Badgers spent the first half playing a little game among themselves.  They competed to see who could hit the most different places on the rim.  They hit the front of the rim, the back of the rim and the sides of the rim.  Occasionally one ball missed and went in to the net, but not often.

Meanwhile Southern Illinois was playing hard, aggressive basketball.  They were not intimidated either by the Badgers' size or by playing a Big 10 team.  They shot the ball well and outrebounded the bigger Badgers in the first half.

When Wisconsin wasn't missing first-half shots, they were committing fouls.  Freshman Nina Smith, who will get in foul trouble as she learns to use her size, picked up three in less than 6 minutes of play in the half.  Jessie Stomski and Tamara Moore each had two fouls at half.

When Smith went out with her second foul six minutes into the game, Wisconsin led 10-6.  The Salukis went on a run that eventually gave them their biggest lead of the game, 30-18, when Terica Hathaway and Molly McDowell hit back to back three pointers.

At the half, a not-at-all pleased Wisconsin coach Jane Albright suggested that her team might want to pick up their tempo a tad.

They did.

Smith scored six straight points to cut the 32-22 halftime deficit to 32-28.  The teams traded baskets for a while before Jessie Stomski's six points keyed a 9-0 run that left the Badgers with a 43-40 lead.  Wisconsin never trailed again.  They maintained a three-four possession lead for the rest of the game, but So Illinois wouldn't fold and the game never got out of hand.  Kelley Paulus led the Badgers down the stretch as she scored 11 points in the last 6 minutes.

In the second half, Wisconsin made 17 of 22 shots for a nice 77.3 shooting percentage.  The Badgers handed out 13 of their 17 assists in the half.  While Bucky had 19 turnovers for the game, they only had 4 in the last 16 minutes.

Stomski led Wisconsin with 15 points, including her first collegiate three pointer, 2 steals and 6 rebounds.  LaTonya Sims 13 points, 7 boards, 2 blocks and 3 steals.  Paulus had 14 points and 3 assists.  Nina Smith had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks in 22 minutes.  Point guard Dee Dee Pate had 4 assists and only 1 turnover.

Melaniece Bardley led So Ill with 13 points and 8 rebounds.  Molly McDowell had 12 points and 3 assists while Kristine Abramowski had 9 rebounds.

Wisconsin plays Nebraska Sunday afternoon while So Ill plays Georgia Southern.
