Wisconsin 66 UW-Green Bay 56
The Wisconsin women's basketball team is getting closer. Closer to home
that is.
After opening up the season with four road games, the Badgers traveled a bit
up the interstate to play a game in their home state Wednesday evening. The
result was a hard fought 10 point win over an always scrappy UW-Green Bay
Phoenix team
Wisconsin, or Wisconsin-Madison as the Green Bay announcer likes to say,
pulled away from the Phoenix in the last five minutes to record their fourth
road win of the season. That is one more than last year's not-quite road
warriors managed.
The Badgers spent the first half of the game practicing their rim shots
again as they shot only 36% from the field. But Wisconsin used their size
to dominate the boards and hold a one point half-time lead.
The teams stayed close for most of the second half. Wisconsin was able to
score basically at will when they worked the ball inside. But Jane Albright
is trying to develop a perimeter game and so they didn't just throw it
inside. Senior shooting guard Kelley Paulus, the team's best outside
shooter, was out after suffering a concussion in Sunday's game, and the
perimeter game was somewhat short of dominating.
Green Bay is an excellently coached team that works as hard as anyone. They
stayed with the Badgers with timely shooting and tough defense. With about
five minutes to play, Wisconsin began going exclusively to their front line
and the game was over.
The best thing for Bucky was the first typical LaTonya Sims line of the
season. She hit 8 of 15 shots, for 17 points to go with 9 rebounds and no
turnovers. Jessie Stomski had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Tamara Moore
added 11 points and 12 boards. Nina Smith scored a career high 15 points.
Melanie Tilque and Trisha Ebel each had 15 for Green Bay.
Wisconsin dominated the boards 53-29 and shot 57% from the field in the
second half.
On Sunday, the Badgers finally get to play at home. They host some bunch
from Tennessee who wear orange. Should be interesting.
