Mary Berdo | 5'10 | G | Berdo, a three point specialist, returns to the Hawkeyes after sitting out two season with a lack of interest. |
Iowa enters 1999 with a small, but experienced roster.
With the departure of Amy Herrig, the Hawks will rely on their guards to carry more of the scoring load. Lindsey Meder was one of the top freshmen, as well as one of the top three point shooters, in 1998 and has shown she be a consistent scorer. Cara Consuegra has one of the top assist/turnover ratios in the league and can also score.
But the Hawks will struggle in the post. Peterson has shown signs of being a solid Big 10 post player, while Watson is a very athletic but undersized post. There is little other proven talent and the incoming freshmen don't offer much hope that they can contribute immediately.
Iowa was not a good defensive team in 1998. They do not appear to have the weapons to be a high scoring unit so the defense will have to improve significantly.
This is not a team that will have much margin for error. They will have to shoot well, take care of the ball and have everyone crashing the boards. Angie Lee is giving her team a difficult non-conference schedule which should help them get ready for the league season.
There is talent at Iowa, but there aren't many talented players. Lee maximized her talent in 1998. Even if she can do that in 99, a second division finish is likely.
By position:
Point guard. Consuegra is one of the better point guards in the conference. She's a good shooter and has a solid assist/turnover ratio. She'll probably need to score a little more. More importantly, she'll have to make sure she runs the team effectively to maximize their scoring opportunities. She's shown the ability to do this.
Swing players. Meder and Magner return as starters. Meder is solid and one of the league's very best three point shooters. Magner has to significantly improve her scoring.
Post players. This may determine how the year goes. Peterson was having a solid year in 98 until she was hit with a major case of flu. I'm not sure she ever fully recovered he strength. Watson is the most athletic of the post players, but is undersized. She is the likely starter at power forward with Peterson moving to center. The two should score some, but they will have problems rebounding with the bigger post players.
Bench. Berdo and Jennings will provide depth at guard, but it's questionable how much help the bench will provide to the starting post players.
Strengths: guard play, three point shooting
Weaknesses: post play, lack of depth, rebounding
Key Games: Feb 3 @ Indiana, Feb 20 @ Minnesota
Key Player: Randi Peterson. She will be the player who has to step into Herrig's shoes.
Question Hawkeye fans are asking: Why can't Angie recruit?
