1998 in Review
Not much was expected of the Wildcats before the season and not much was produced. Any chance coach Don Perrelli had of exceeding expectations ended when Kristina Divjak, one of the league's very best returning players, went down with a knee injury early in the non-conference season. In Divjak and Megan Chawansky, Perrelli would have had one of the top twosomes in the Big 10.
Had Divjak stayed healthy, Perrelli would have had a chance to surprise the league one more time in his final season. Junior Leslie Schock stepped up to be among the league's premier players, while soph Tammy Sears had a solid season at center.
But Chawansky, Schock and Sears were essentially all the Cats had. NW was weak at point guard and got virtually no contribution from the bench. The Wildcats finished tenth in scoring offense, ninth in scoring defense and last in rebounding.
Unfortunately, the classy Perrelli's last team was just plain bad.
